It’s a slow start to the year, and I did not pick the right book to start, but that’s okay. Discipline is Destiny is a philosophy book that tries to bring the wisdom of the ancients to the modern mind. That means it’s not really my style, but the substance was excellent.

What started as a slog picked up mid-book, and I am now finished and satisfied with the time I spent reading it. The through line is that we have the opportunity to master ourselves, to the extent we are willing to do so. Though discipline is hard, and feels restrictive, it paradoxically frees us to be fully alive in a way that a lack of discipline boxes us into mediocrity.

The text is good, the philosophy is sound, and I had the discipline to finish the book.
