August 14,2020
The real reason is Congress imposed a crushing mandate on the Postal Service back in 2006, requiring it to prefund decades of future health care premiums for retired postal employees in advance. This prefunding mandate, which no other enterprise in the country faces, cost an average of $5.4 billion annually since 2007, accounting for nearly 90% of the agency’s losses. Between 2013 and 2018 it accounted for 100% of the losses.

Wow, great that so many folks are now realizing that the US Postal Service is in desperate need of structural changes!
Surely these newly enlightened folks aren’t just using it as a political wedge.

Are Voters Ready for Prime Minister Biden? - WSJ
The biggest indicator, however, is that at this late date no one knows what Mr. Biden truly stands for—and, more important, no one cares. It’s now widely accepted that his administration will be the plaything of jostling Democratic special interests.
A remarkably astute set of analysis.
The other lesson is that, despite improved aesthetics, the day-to-day running of a Biden administration would not be substantively better, and could be worse, than the Trump circus. Mr. Trump is terrible at his job, but at least he’s in charge. Voters know whom to blame for each erratic firing, each dumb tweet, each mercurial flip on policy.
Also true.
This is the point. Democrats didn’t pick Mr. Biden because he’s moderate, they picked him because he’s weak.

Joe Biden’s defenses of his faith ring hollow with Kamala Harris pick - Washington Examiner
For a man whose faith has been his “guiding light,” Biden has run away from it publicly in the last year to please the Democratic Party, and Harris has been a driving force in fomenting the anti-Catholic sentiment that made that possible.
Sen. Harris’ questioning of Catholic nominees to the Federal Bench is disconcerting, indeed.

REI Built an Elaborate HQ. Because of Covid-19, the Outdoor Retailer Wants to Sell It - WSJ
The retailer, known as REI, was poised to open the new Seattle-area headquarters this summer after creating a unique building that reflected the company’s outdoorsy image and could serve as a way to recruit new employees. The property features outdoor staircases and bridges, a courtyard of native plants, and skylights to let in sunshine and air.
This is terribly sad!

The abortion pill is wreaking havoc on children and women - Washington Examiner
U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang stated that the “in-person requirements” posed a “substantial obstacle” to women seeking abortions. As a result, the ruling allows abortion businesses to sell abortion pills directly to pregnant women without any in-person evaluation.
Application of this logic: the in-person requirements pose a substantial obstacle for patients in pain. Therefore, Purdue can sell OxyContin direction to pain patients without any in-person evaluation.
See the fundamental logistic flaw?
In-person evaluations with a licensed physician are designed to ensure the appropriateness and safety of the treatment for the individual. Prescription pharmaceuticals are heavy duty tools that require an extra layer of review for the protection of the patient.
